Gustav Machatý’s first sound film infuses realism with a poetic vision of everyday urban life and boldly experiments with the use of sound as a crucial component of the contemporary film language. Based on a story by Vítězslav Nezval and tinged with jazz melodies of Jaroslav Ježek, the film was both thematically and formally progressive for its day.
