A unique life story of theatrical artist which, as the first Czech actor, got the opportunity to work and to succeed in Hollywood of the 1920s. These firstly published memoirs of opera and operetta singer Antonín Vaverka (1868–1937) bring closer the story of the actor who, being 52 years old, tried his luck in the US. He got up to Hollywood where he succeeded thanks to his breakthrough role of emperor Franz Joseph I in Erich von Stroheim's movie Merry-Go-Round. Here he starred in 25 movies, some of them directed by such a great directors as Ernst Lubitsch or Cecil B. DeMille. He experienced workship with the greatest stars of the 1920s – mainly with Gloria Swanson or Greta Garbo – and he also saw the succession of sound film. He returned to Czechoslovakia in 1932 and he wrote down his experiences while they were still fresh.
